Either J1 or the H1B for residency in your case - unless you marry a citizen and get ur green card and then apply for residencies ;-)

In your case, a Student Visa (f1) is only for graduate programs .i.e. Masters or PhD

Hai digital doc.. thank you for ur support thru this website...it really helps a loot!!!
I ve heard that once the residency program starts on a J1 visa, then it can never be changed..and we have to follow the 2yr home country rule...
If that is the case, wot is the farthest date that one can take the step3 exam for 2009 residency match to obtain a H1b visa?

It's wrong to say that residency J1 visa can never be changed that you HAVE to go back for two years - I have already covered J1-waiver options on this blog

As for H1b, most programs would like to see Step 3 pass latest by the last week of Jan - but for pre-match offering programs that give out very early interviews, it helps to have Step 3 results in hand by the time you interview..so that they feel comfortable promising a H1b visa prematch position - instead of risking a promise of an H1b and the candidate fails the Step 3 or does not take it on time...

Secondly Note that for getting dates for Step 3 for a given year, the registration closes in the first week of Sept - which means if you want to take the step 3 in 2008, the latest you can register is the last week of August 2008..From second week of Sept, applications are accepted only for 2009 exam dates - a fact many IMGs overlook and I accept I have not done a good job of warning them about..

hi ...hows u..ur site is extremely useful..i would like to know if we can do observership or exeternship on visitors visa.....and i m planning to take up cs in july and hence expectng the result in oct..i hope its not much of a disadvantage if the cs result is not there in sept wen i start applying..

Hello Birva thank you - i am doing arrite :-D

Yes you can do observerships / externships on visitors visa.

No, it would not be a big disadvantage with NO CS scores in hand at the time of applying, but try to take the CS as early as you can.
