What Visas Are IMGs allowed to do Residency On ?
Besides a Green Card or Citizenship, following Visa Types are allowed for IMGs in Residency Programs
1. J1 Visa
2. J2 Visa
3. H1B Visa - I also came across an American College of Physicians article which mentioned that residents also work on H2 and H3 Visas (Not H4)
4. OPT (Optional Practical Training) - Obtained for a year after Graduating on a F1 Visa
5. O1 Visa
6. EAD (Employment Authorization Document) obtained while on other visas (e.g. L2 visa)

Post Your Comment !very interesting
but need to know wat visa is given for those out of us and offered interviews during the match race.... i think visitor visa?!!!
so wat happened if an interview date is out of period of visitor visa?!!!!
can i ask the program director for an arlier interview date?!!!!
When you get an interview invite from a residency program, they offer you choices of dates to choose from, spanning several months, so that you can plan your travel well.
thnx digi for quick reply

Hi DIGI,
I have pretty complicated issue which will make me whether to go on in the USMLE prep or turn back to something else. I am a physician and Fulbrighter doing master of Health administration, currently on J-1 visa. I've Just started prep for USMLE...but my concern is that will I be able to get a residency after finishing this master (and of course USMLE) and what about the 2 year eligibility period. I.e. what is the type of visa that I will get from the residency program in this case (and will it be possible to waive the 2 years by those who will offer the residency for me??) please try to help me even by refering me to helpful sources...coz i gotta figure it out before I goo deeply into USMLE.
Thank u very much in advance
Abdul.... MD, MPH, MHA Uni of Scranton, PA
Dear Abdullah - You may not be able to convert to an H1b visa for a residency without completing the 2 year Home country requirement or getting a waiver, but you might be able to do a residency on a J1 visa or an O1 visa. I would recommend that you call ECFMG on the number listed on ECFMG.org and ask for talking to someone who deals with visa issues.
Also, the International Student Center at your university will have someone knowledgible to deal with the Fulbright related visa issues.
hi digi.... thanx for this prompt reply. i'd like to know if there are residency or fellowship programs that are considered as, or located in, underserved area or serve underserved population? if there is, do u think that getting into one of them will work as a waiver for the two yr home country requirement? coz it's basically one of the waiver's grounds, to work in an underserved area. in addition, i will be very gratefull if u tell me whether it will be a bit harder for me to get a residency (even with J-1 visa) because the residency program people have to work on defering (postponing) the two yr home country requirement of this current J-1 visa, to three or five years later till i finish my residency. in other words, will the chance of getting residency for those who had J-1 visa (but have not fulfil the 2 yr req. yet)be the same as those who r on F1 or other type of visa? by the way, i asked fulbright ppl, but they dont know these details.
i m appreciating ur wonderful support. thank u very much and hope u always the best.
Hello digi
I plan to start my residency in 2009. I have actually J2 visa. My husband is a resident that will finish and apply for waiver in 2009, at the same time I plan to start my residency. Do I need a different visa to start my residency or can I do It with his waiver?, We are so confuse about my situation, I have step 1 and 2 ready, but We are not really sure If I will be able to start my residency due to my immigration status during that time. We will be so thankful if you can give me some information. Liliana.
Answer 1: Residency . Fellowship programs are considered training programs and not employment in the sense of the waiver requirements and are not eligible for waiver-job status
Answer 2: Your J2 status will be over when your spouse starts his waiver job on H1b visa. So you can either change to h4 status (cant work on that) to get your own J1 or H1b visa through the residency programs, (u will be eligible for that since your spouse will be getting a waiver which automatically waives off ur need to do so ) - make sure you are never out of status in between the changes..
